This website sets no advertising cookies and loads no third-party tracking code. Everything described here is first-party: written by us, served from https://1128club.com, and stored in our own database.

This page is also where you change your choice. Your current setting, and the controls to change it, are at the foot of this page.

1. Strictly necessary storage

These are set regardless of choice, because the site cannot do what you asked without them. Under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations they do not require consent.

• e28_session — a cookie holding your signed member session. Set only when you sign in. HttpOnly, Secure, SameSite=Lax, expires after seven days.
• e28_analytics_consent — a small entry in your browser’s local storage recording that you accepted or declined analytics. It holds one word and no identifier. We must remember your choice in order to honour it.
• e28_cookie_notice — records that you have seen the notice, so it is not shown again.

2. Analytics

Our analytics is first-party and is used for one purpose: to understand which writing is read, and how well. It feeds the Most Read list on the Journal. It sends nothing to any advertising network, and there is no cross-site tracking of any kind.

For each page view we record the page address (with query parameters removed except campaign tags), the page title, the referring page (query parameters removed), the type and category of the content, how far you scrolled, how many seconds the page was actively in front of you, your browser language and a coarse screen-size band. From the request itself we derive a two-letter country code, a coarse region, a device type, a browser family and an operating system. We never store your IP address; see section 2 of the Privacy Notice for what happens to it instead.

Individual events are deleted after 13 months. What remains is aggregate counts that identify nobody.

3. What your choice actually changes

The only thing consent controls is whether we store a persistent identifier on your device — a value that would let us recognise the same browser across visits and join your page views into a single history.

• If you have not yet chosen — no persistent identifier is created and nothing analytics-related is written to your device. Page views are still counted, but each is anonymous and unlinked, so we can see that a page was read and cannot see that it was you who read it.
• If you accept — we store e28_analytics_anon and e28_analytics_session in your browser’s local storage. These are random values with no meaning outside this site. They let us tell a returning reader from a new one and follow a single visit across pages.
• If you decline — any identifier already stored is deleted immediately, none is created, and none will be created again for as long as your choice stands. Anonymous, unlinked page counting continues as in the first case.

We chose this design deliberately: declining should cost you nothing and should not quietly switch off the counts that tell an editor whether an article was worth writing. Declining removes our ability to recognise you. It does not remove the page from the tally.

4. Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control

If your browser sends a Do Not Track header or a Global Privacy Control signal, we stop all analytics collection entirely — not merely the identifier — regardless of any other setting, and we do so before the first event is sent. You do not have to do anything else.

5. Third-party analytics

No third-party analytics or tag manager is loaded by this site. The codebase supports optional Google Analytics 4, Microsoft Clarity and Plausible integrations, and all three are unconfigured; the content security policy would block them from loading even if they were not. If that ever changes, this page will say so before it happens, and those providers will be gated behind the same consent.

6. Managing storage in your browser

You can clear the values described here at any time through your browser’s settings for site data. Clearing them also clears your recorded choice, so you will be asked again. Blocking the e28_session cookie will prevent you from signing in to the member area.
